Spotlight on… Aloe Blacc

I don’t know quite where Aloe Blacc has gone.  Not physically.  Physically, he’s been touring the US and visiting Ghana and all sorts.  But musically, he’s kind of neglected the UK for a while… I Need a Dollar was one of the biggest (and probably one of the most covered) hits of 2011.

His debut album, Good Things was one of my most listened-to albums of last Summer: vibrant, fresh, soulful and funky.  I’ve been looking forward to hearing more releases from this album on the radio, and although he released Green Lights last September, it didn’t get quite the same reception.  For whatever reason, he played his strongest card first, and then pulled out a two of clubs to follow.

To be honest, I don’t think Aloe Blacc has really capitalised on this amazing album.  It’s a pity really, because I think everyone ought to own a copy.  There are some really sublime tracks on there, such as Miss Fortune – which I personally think is a much finer piece of musical composition than the somewhat repetitive but justifiably popular debut track – and the beautifully soulful Mama Hold My Hand – which brings me to tears, very literally, every time I listen to it.

Aloe Blacc is an incredible talent, not only musically, but also with the style he puts into his image and his live performances.  I genuinely believe that many more people should familiarise themselves with his music, and I think he might need a bit of a hand.  For that reason, Good Things is my featured album of the day.

Enjoy x
