To my mind, few sounds in this world are prettier or more soothing than the sound of a simple vocal and an acoustic guitar, especially when done right.  The music of Grey Reverend, the solo project of Pennsylvania born L.D. Brown, is no less than a perfect example of how to do it right.

In spite of suffering from focal dystonia, which affects dexterity in the hands, Brown has developed a unique and haunting playing style, beautiful and warm.  Rich bass notes and harmonics flow out of his guitar in mesmerizing waves, accompanied by his soulful bluesy voice.

Since 2006, Brown has been based in Brooklyn, where he began collaborating with local artists and songwriters.  It was there that he met Jason Swinscoe, founding member of The Cinematic Orchestra, and shortly after, began touring with the group, supporting them in tours worldwide, whilst working on the development of his own songwriting style.

In 2011, Grey Reverend released international debut LP Of The Days via Ninja Tune/Motion Audio Records, a stunning introductory offering which one can happily melt into.  Listen to it here:

According to Grey Reverend’s blog:

“Since the release of Grey Reverend’s debut LP for Motion Audio/Ninja Tune Records in 2011 GR has been touring the UK and Europe, performing and writing music with The Cinematic Orchestra, and quietly constructing an album of new GR material with assistance from some extremely talented friends and musicians.  The results of the past 8 months have produced an album of songs and musical ideas that GR feels to be “the most replete exhibition of his abilities as  a guitarist and singer”.”

I’m personally waiting with baited breath to get my hands on a copy of forthcoming album, though the title and official release date are yet to be confirmed.  When I know more, I’ll be sure to keep you all updated, but in the mean time, stay up to date with Grey Reverend by following:
